Gum Disease Treatment

Blood when you floss or brush is not normal!

However, it is one of the first signs of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can seriously affect your teeth and overall well-being. Catching and treating gum disease early can prevent tooth loss and more expensive treatments down the road.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the tissues surrounding the teeth, including the gums and bone. Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the form of plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and, if untreated, potential tooth loss. Gum disease is typically not painful and can go undetected until it is too late.

According to the CDC, periodontal disease increases with age. 70.1% of adults 65 years and older have periodontal disease.

Our Minimally Invasive Approach to Gum Disease Treatment

Step 1: Assessment

Begin with a one-hour comprehensive exam, including x-rays, to evaluate your gum health and map out a personalized care plan.

Step 2: Treatment

Our three-phase minimally invasive approach is designed to restore and maintain healthy gums:

  • Phase 1: Inflammation Reduction
    • Using state-of-the-art tools like an endoscopic camera and guided biofilm therapy, we perform a deep cleaning above and below the gumline. This precise process removes harmful bacteria, reduces inflammation, and sets the stage for healing.
  • Phase 2: Structural Restoration
    • After Phase 1, many patients transition to maintenance, while others may require minimal surgery. Pocket reduction surgery addresses bone loss and corrects bony irregularities caused by periodontal disease. Deep pockets and uneven bone structure increase the risk of disease recurrence. This procedure involves bone grafting and reshaping these areas to create a healthier foundation, helping to prevent the gum infection from returning.
  • Phase 3: Ongoing Maintenance
    • Regular follow-up care helps maintain your results, ensuring your gums stay healthy for life.

Meet Our Doctor

Dr. Christopher Bingham

As a periodontist, Dr. Christopher Bingham has received an additional three years of training beyond dental school and is a board-certified periodontist. Saving smiles is what he does EVERY DAY!

Dr. Bingham and his team take a minimally invasive approach to treat gum disease's inflammatory and anatomical effects using the latest technology and protocols not available anywhere else in Austin.

Most dentists take only one class during dental school on periodontal disease and are not trained to manage a chronic inflammatory disease. Gum disease differs greatly from a filling, crown, or dental implant that typically recquire a single visit and minimal follow-up.

Just like diabetes or other chronic inflammatory conditions, treating periodontal disease requires a systematic approach and diligent follow-up from a trained specialist. Dr. Bingham is uniquely skilled in diagnosing and treating gum disease.

Many patients go through PHASE 1 and then skip PHASE 3. Some patients will begin at PHASE 2. Periodontal disease is complex, and each patient is unique. Dr. Bingham has designed our treatment protocol to be systematic but also flexible to meet the needs of each patient.
We use an endoscope and guided biofilm therapy, which combined, are more effective than laser at treating gum disease. Laser treatments for gum disease are heavily marketed but have proven to be no more effective than traditional scaling and root planing.
